“Palm will next month make available an unlocked version of its Treo 500 smartphone following the end of carrier’s Vodafone’s time offering the handset on an exclusive basis.Palm didn’t state what the 500’s specs will be, so we assume they’ll match those of the Vodafone model, the 500v – reviewed here. Research in Motion Ltd.’s fiscal third-quarter profit more than doubled on strong demand for its BlackBerry smart phones by consumers and businesses.The company’s shares jumped more than 11 percent after Thursday’s earnings report came out.For the quarter ended Dec. 1, Canada-based RIM earned $370.5 million, or 65 cents per share, compared with $175.2 million, or 31 cents per share, in the same quarter last year.The company’s third-quarter revenue rose to $1.67 billion from $835.1 million last year.Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected earnings of 62 cents per share on $1.65 billion in revenue.”It is clear from the results in this quarter that BlackBerry smartphones have crossed over from being viewed as a primarily enterprise product to being marketed as a strong mainstream offering,” said co-CEO Jim Balsillie, who added that 34 percent of RIM’s subscriber base are direct consumers. And 33 percent of subscribers are outside North America.RIM said about 1.65 million BlackBerry subscriber accounts were added during the quarter, and more than 3.9 million handsets were shipped.”It was really driven on stronger consumer volumes in December,” said Peter Misek, an analyst with Canaccord Adams.In its fourth fiscal quarter, RIM expects earnings of 66 cents to 70 cents per share on revenue of $1.8 billion to $1.87 billion.Balsillie said strong sales in the consumer market and outside North America will continue to spur growth. He said the increase in consumer subscriptions will make forecasting harder because that part of the business is new to RIM.”It makes the guidance even more impressive,” Misek said.Shares added $4.86, or 4.8 percent, to close at $106.99 in Thursday trading. The stock price jumped 11.63 percent to $119.43 after hours.The stock is up 151 percent since January as of Thursday’s close.”It’s just been on a rocket ship,” said Deepak Chopra, an analyst with National Bank Financial. “You’re going to see this company to grow for some time to come. This just shows they are executing phenomenally well.”Chopra said fears of an economic slow affecting RIM are overblown.The third-quarter results followed word RIM has been hit with a lawsuit by wireless communications company TeleCommunication Systems Inc. TeleCommunication claims in the lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia, that RIM is infringing on its patent for technology that allows users to access multiple e-mail accounts on their wireless devices.

“One of China’s largest handset and infrastructure vendors has reportedly adopted a Linux-based mobile phone software stack as part of its standard 3G mobile phone operating system. ZTE will incorporate Trolltech’s Qtopia Phone Edition into its Linux-based “U980″ platform for 3G TD-CDMA phones, according to Trolltech. Zhongxing Telecommunication Equipment (ZTE) was founded by Zhongxing Semiconductor in 1993. In 2006, it boasted nearly 40,000 employees, and annual revenues of about $3.12 billion, up from 20,000 employees and $2.61 billion revenues the year before.In addition to handsets, ZTE sells infrastructure equipment, and in fact bills itself as the fastest-growing telecom equipment manufacturer (TEM) in the world. It recently won a massive contract to build half of state carrier China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA network.”U980” is apparently ZTE’s standard Linux-based operating system to be used on handsets designed for use with China Mobile’s TD-SCDMA network. Phones based on the U980 platform will reportedly be sold through China Mobile, according to Trolltech.The U980 stack is hardly ZTE’s first Linux-based mobile phone OS. In an October survey by VisionMobile, ZTE ranked sixth globally among Linux handset OEMs (original equipment manufacturers), after Motorola, NEC, Panasonic, Samsung, and rival Chinese firm, Haier.Trolltech’s Qtopia Phone Edition (QPE) application platform and user interface stack will serve as the application development framework for ZTE’s Linux-based U980 platform, says Trolltech. “The Chinese-language IT168 has posted a picture of a new Motorola’s mobile phone with a 5-megapixel camera by Kodak. According to the source, this is a slider called X PIXL Z12. The new model has been already mentioned as a part of Motorola 2008 roadmap. The company has really reamed up with Kodak to add a 5-megapixel camera with xenon flash.
